If he wants another alternative to the USNA he should look into the United States Merchant Marine Academy here:

You can serve in ANY branch of the US Military upon graduation and if he is trying to get a spot in the flight program his chances are better here because this school gets as many spots each year in flight school as all the other academies but there is less competition because the student population is significantly smaller than the other academies. He can also graduate with an engineering degree and a United States Coast Guard License to work on commercial ships as a Maritime Officer. It's worth taking a look for his sake to continue his pursuit of a combined military/college career.
