"Red top" Cummins N14

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a late 1990s Pete 379, and while most of the trucks I've looked at have the Caterpillar 3406E, some have Cummins' N14 rated from 435HP and up. A lot of these seem to be the "red top" version.

I understand the red valve cover is supposed to be an indication of a high-horsepower engine. Are there any issues I should be aware of with these?

Also, I'm not as familiar with Cummins history as I am with Caterpillar. In the 1995-2000 range, were there any mechanical/electronic bridge motors, early/crappy emissions control technology or any other problem engines I should avoid?

Input much appreciated.
