It is possible to wait too long to change your fluid. Transmission fluid has a lot of detergent in it to help keep the trans. clean. Years and miles of neglect use up the detergency of the fluid and you get oxidation and varnish buildup that new fresh fluid can soften and release into your trans. where it can restrict flow and prevent valves from functioning properly thereby ruining the transmission. Catch 22. If the fluid is still cherry red and does not smell burnt, clean the transmission pan, change the filter, add a cooler and replace only the fluid lost from the filter change. If it looks or smells burnt I'd change it and still add the cooler.
