I feel the "trade off" that you had originally asked about, is the cost of the maintenance. Diesel engines are a specialized piece of kit that I don't let just anybody work on....on mine anyway. I also feel that you have to have a reason for owning one. If you are buying a large diesel powered vehicle just for a commuter vehicle, I don't think you will be pleased. If you have serious work for that vehicle to do than I feel that you will be tickled pink with the results.

Things that I keep in mind WRT my diesel that I don't give a second thought towards my gas engines are fuel filters and fuel quality. I am religous about changing fuel filters and always use an additive as well as only buying from larger stations with fresh fuel.
