A white crust around the degas bottle will tell you you have bad gaskets, no crust and you probably are ok there.... You can change the thermostat yourself, just like you would on any engine just be sure to use the ford gold or zerex G05 antifreeze and distilled water to refill the rad. I would also take it back to the selling dealer and make sure it has the latest computer flash. Some of the trucks were having issues with the fan turning on too late or not at all. While it was overheating you should have heard the fan running (sounds like you are being passed by a jet plane - you will literally say to yourself "what the *ell is that"). If you did not hear the fan go on then that would be the starting point. It is electrically controlled by the computer, make sure the wire is still connected. Also...some of the trucks had bad dashes that would show an overheat but there really wasn't, this was in the 04's i think but if you have an job 1 05 it could be a possibility. Approach the dealer about this at the same time you ask about what software (flash) the truck has. good luck and don't panic.
