I *think* what I did with mine was pre-fill my pre-pump filter than did the "turn the key for 30 seconds" bit three or so times.
When we installed the ITP pre-pump filter on my friend's 2001, we just cycled the key about a half dozen times until we saw the fuel pressure gauge respond (he had the ITP regulated return system with fuel gauge).
Either way, it's not that big of a deal.
