I did tons of research last winter before rebuilding my traction lok. Lots of pros and cons with lock up rear ends for daily drivers on the highway.
If you've had experience with a lock up unit, then you know what you're getting in to.
The semi float is not a problem at all to pull the axles and change out the differential gears or install a lock up unit.......you just need a bearing puller and a press......you sure don't want to change the pinion position.....you want to put that differential back exactly where it was....and that means you need to have shims ready if needed.
You can even buy a lock up unit that will swap out perfectly with the existing trac-lok.
Dana has a lot of info available on the web so you shouldn't have to tear it apart to count splines before you have the parts ordered.
