I just removed the head from my 2002 Excursion and there is no manifold gasket. Just metal on metal. You need to soak the bolt with PB Blaster the day before and be very careful not to break one off. I pulled my head with the manifold attached and then took it off. When I installed the head I put the manifold on after the head was in.
