Yes the power steering pump is involved in the brakes also. It supplies the hydroboost unit. Sounds like you need a new pump (or fix a big leak somewhere).

(Just remember to use Carb cleaner and not brake cleaner to remove the gunk)
To me it sounds like you have sticking vanes on your turbo also - you should be considering pulling and cleaning it. If the vanes stick, you can overboost and this jeopardizes head gaskets.
