Down shifting

I'm wondering if there is any reason that down shifting would be a problem or cause any harm to my engine or tranny.
I can imagine that it puts unnecessary wear on both of them, but i have had to pull a bobcat a few times, and the trailer breaks don't work anymore, so i rely on down shifting and giving myself LOTS of stopping room.
Any thoughts?
