If you give me a week I can probably give you an answer on length from the top of the lower tube. I have had an e40d in and out 3-4 times trying to figure out why it won't go. I had the oil level perfect when I took it out last weekend, but now the rebuilders have it back trying to figure out why it won't function. I think the level needs to be higher than the intake to the filter. Thats what it looks like anyway. There's plenty of guys on here that can probably give you an answer.
I have a question though: Are you running the electronic controls on the E40D? or it just stand alone without controls? How does it shift etc? I can't get a straight answer from everyone whether the E40D will operate without the PCM.
