Agree. And the tread pattern wouldn't have to match exactly, but they should at least be a similar design.
The old Steeltex AT is similar to the new Transforce AT, so I would probably buy one Firestone Transforce AT, and put it on the front. Put the matched pair on the rear axle.

But if you're anal about having matched pairs of tires on each axle, then buy a matched pair instead of only one tire, and put the third Steeltex AT in the spare.
