I called the local International service center nearby and was told that it was about 4-5 hours of labor as well to pull it at about $99/hr shop rate. Asked if it was worth doing on a 6.0L and he advised that if there is pitting, corrosion, or any other problems they recommend replacing rather than cleaning but won't know usually until it's already off.
He said that he would honestly just replace it with an upgraded one for about $1200-1400 and do the swap in the driveway but said it was an all day job for a do-it-yourselfer. He did not recommend cleaning it if I had not done it before as it is apparently rather easy to mess up the vanes while cleaning. He said that if I have some good manuals, should not be a problem replacing the existing one since it is essentially a part swap, but to check the EGR valve and replace if needed since the same coking that makes the VGT vanes stick will clog the EGR valve.
Not a cheap fix by any means. I'm in the same situation as you right now, with the sticky vanes, but also hear a rush of air but no high pitched whistle, so I'll be checking the backside of one of the hoses to the turbo this evening to ensure there is no leak there which could mask any other issues.
