Just had a similar alternator diagnosis with my truck from the dealer. I have been experiencing surging idle and engine stalls on a couple occasions. 1st time (about a month ago) dealer advised on "excessive carbon build-up". They did a repair, labor cost was: $1400. ESP plan covered major parts (turbo rebuild, EGR, etc.) but not labor. Next day lost turbo boost EBP sensor failed, dealer repaired. Last Wednsday, again surging idle and engine stall. The new diagnosis revealed alternator has intermitten voltage drop which inturn affects the FICM signals, thus the surging and stalling (according to them). My point is, I brought to their attention (the dealer) FICM wiring harness issues that surfaced early in 2005 and pressed the issue with them to run an OASIS report on my truck (no recall campaign was present). I feel that prompted them to take a better look at my electrical system. Why didn't they do a more thorough check the first time. Now again I must pay a $50 deductible and wait a few days to get the truck back. There are 2 additional issues they are also repairing a leaking oil bypass or turbo oil line (they refer to it as a turbo duct connection) and the MASS air plastic conduit which both were damaged when re-installed incorrectly during the first repair a month ago. Just thought I would share this little adventure with you all...
