Yes the filter drains into the pan. I usually open the filter so it drains into the pan, roll underneath on my creeper, pull the drain plug, and let it drain until I see no more steady oil flowing out. I then put in my new Motorcraft filter, re-install the plug, and fill with the oil of your choice.
