I was wondering about commercial fishing vessels also. A few thoughts are marine fuel is less restrictive? Marine engines designed with larger injectors than land motors? I do not have the perfect answer. Our rigs on the job use it now but they didn't for about 4 years. We were not having a ny problems with LSD then when the ULSD came out things changed a bit.. to the tune of a bunch of $$ for injectors. I work for FD with all Detroit diesels. Some injectors were failing. Not sure the reason , suspect was the fuel, but now the dept. uses a treatment. We have not had any more problems to note.
Crazy thing is I went to shop and checked out engine and size of injectors. These things are huge compaired to on our personal little rigs. Hard to believe they could clog but problems arose just the same.
I am sure there are real good numbers out for a variety of additives on the market. My stance remains as it was when I started using product. The brand is important but more important (to me) is as long as your using something, you are reducing chances of any type of engine failure.. be it injectors gumming up or DPF clogging, whatever the case may be.
I have mentioned in several posts I have written about Schaeffer products...specifically Dieseltreat how good I feel that product is. The numbers do not lie. What I use may not produce the highest numbers ( 4-5 points is what Schaeffer produces) but well above minimum standards for a supplement. Since I use their fluid exclusively, I have done a bit more research on it and through MSDS am satisfied at what I read.
I guess it is like many other truthisms... take care of your engine and it will takes care of you
