I use a 7(RV) to 5 flat adapter (Peterson V5415 4" 7 to 5-Way Harness Adapter-Product Description; 7-Way to 5-Way Adapter allows connection of a 5-way flat trailer plug to a 7-way receptacle. Designed to be used with boat and utility trailers with certain hydraulic surge brakes) w/my boat trailer...the 5th pin is energized by the revverse lights activating the solenoid to prevent the trailer brakes from activating while in reverse...mine is a molded adapter, I have also seen it available as a "pigtail style" you could always make your own as well....
