Thanks Gooch! You are really a wealth of information and I appreciate you helping to make it painless.
For disposal of the old antifreeze, I had two options... one was to go to the state sponsored 'hazardous waste' event (well done and free here in RI). But one of my tractor buddies was looking to 'load' his rear tractor tires. Usually they are loaded with calcium chloride (SALT!). The old stuff tested good for temp, so I also saved some to keep on the barn up north. Always good to have some 'spare' stuff around.
I was able to get Rotella ELC by the case for about $14 a gallon. I sent Shell an email asking about it's use in my 2.2l 'Ecotec' Chevy (dex-cool filled aluminum block) as it seems to be a perfect replacement coolant in a 5 year old car. They replied quickly and it's OK as long as it's well flushed (and not in warranty). So I will flush and fill that with one of the 'spare' gallons (holds 8.6 Q).
Also, the new thermostat I got from the dealer has a gasket built in. I bought a gasket anyway, good thing because the old one leaked like crazy with no thermostat (very dried out).
Sure am glad I found Gooch's post!
