Patrickrc51,
Did you check the oil level? Was it way low on oil? That would be my first thing to check.
Had that happen on a rental box truck with the ford diesel in it 8 years ago. Somewhere, about 100 miles from nowhere, in the middle of the night, my son was driving it up a fairly steep pass. I was behind him in another truck. All of a sudden, the lights went dim, and he pulled it over to the side of the road, dead. Didn't think to check the oil, but we waited a little bit, and it started back up, but only had enough power to go about 30 mph to the next exit. Got off, called the rental company and they had me take it to a 24 hr truck shop close by. First thing the guy did was pull the dip stick out. There wasn't enough oil to even show up on the stick. Once we had it topped off with 4 gallons of fresh oil, it ran like a champ the rest of the 1800 miles home. so, I learned my lesson on that trip. just my .02 cents worth
