We have a dead truck. Got it towed to nearest town. My fishing guide recommended a mechanic. After an hour+ and a diag that gave a P1283 code, his best guess was the IPR. I didn't have my computer so my wife looked up some things on your site. I asked him about the possibility of it being the IDM, PCM maybe the HPOP or a fuel problem. He wasn't thrilled with my questions.
So, bieing 100+ miles from a dealer, he ordered the part ($300)and the next day installed it, test drove it and said it was ready. I picked it up, it ran great around town for 30-40 miles (better than before). So we hit the road and 20 miles later, it died. It gave the same code. Now I lost 2 days of fishing (plus the bill for the mechanic)and it is being towed to the dealer where I will have to go back and get it next week.
Before it died it had been running a little rough for some time. Wasn't sure if it was the tranny or engine. Then it began to be hard to start when the temp went below 50. I did change the oil just before the trip. I was driving along and had been for almost 200 miles when it started acting like it was running low on fuel (should not have been) so I switched tanks. It died. I started it again and went a little ways and it died again. It did that 2 more times and then would crank but not turn over.
So, it is at the dealer. I will talk with them in the am but I would like some advice so I don't get taken to the cleaners. Fuel, IDM, PCM or.....
Oh, 1997 F350 club cab, standard stuff with 178,000 miles. Only thing we've had to do is tranny rebuild, brakes, tie rod and power steering pump.
