I retired just after the big diesels went electronic, so I've never seen one, but I worked on the mechanical versions for years. With that said, I bet you'd have to use old mechanical heads because I'd think the electronic injectors would be completely different. Plus the old Detroits have a camshaft lobe, pushrod, rocker ass'y, etc, for each of the injectors. Then there's the mechanical governor, racks, etc. GoneFishen still works at a Detroit dealership, hopefully he'll post with better information. I'd be curious myself to know what all Detroit changed over. I know they even have a fly-by-wire throttle because some years back a driver was on the C.B. near the Evanston, WY Flying J asking for help with his 8V92 throttle. It wouldn't go above idle and it was on a Sunday of course. He was NOT pleased.
