It was commonly referred to as the buzz flash and hurts nothing. It is, as stated above, the predecssor to the inductive flash. It helps with a phenom called injector stiction that affected cold starts. It is all done electrically thru the injector spool valves. It is supposedly easier on the FICM than the inductive flash. That is still being debated however.
