Back in my day (the 1960s and 1970s during the Vietnam war), E5 in the Air Force was hard to make. Lots of good people volunteered for Air Force duty to keep from being drafted into a foxhole job. Lots of competition for the few open slots for promotion, so it was not unusual for someone to go 8 years and still be an E-4 (buck sergeant). So when someone made E-5 it was a big deal, and you knew they were a heckuva good airman.
I retired in 1992, and haven't been around Air Force folks much since then. Is it still that hard to make E5?
