The HEUI and common rail systems are not that far apart actually. The main difference is just what applies the fuel pressure. Although both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. I am fairly sure you are not the first person to think of applying a common rail system to the power stroke. Especially given the 6.4 is common rail. I suppose it could be done to a 7.3 or 6.0 but i am not sure the work involved would warrant the power increase.
