The ball I think you are talking about is part of the "Non-Serviceable" plug. If you have that leaking you have to pull the pump. If it is the unions on the head or the pump, you should not need to pull the pump.

If you have a leak from the "Non-serviceable" it can be fixed, but only after removing the HPOP? That doesn't mean you have to replace the pump, right? Can a novice remove the pump and remove the plug, or does it take special tools to service the "non-serviceable" plug?
