That is really the best way to do it. When i need 4wd i just manually lock the hubs and then click the dash switch for the transfer case. When i got my 08 i went with manual hubs and manual transfer case. As a side note, when you get air out the defrosters it means there is no vacuum. That generally means either the hubs are leaking vacuum or a hose is leaking/came off. The defroster is the default if there is a loss of vacuum in all automotive ac/heat systems. You can disconnect the hubs and plug the lines. if you have vacuum then hubs are leaking. If still no vacuum then there is a hose or pump problem.
