question about mudflaps and splash guards

Need some input,

What is the difference between mudflaps and splash guards? Is there value in having the flap wrap around the fender as in a molded guard versus a straight guard? I have read about using the 3m tape to protect the paint and that is what made me think of just using a straight flap. What is the purpose of the stainless steel like I saw with the diamond plate? Is it just a looks thing?

I hope you will pardon my "stupid" questions, but I have no clue and want to make wise decisions. Now that we have a awesome truck, we would like to keep it that way.

We will be pulling a 5th wheel on trips if that makes any difference. Thanks for all your help guys.

Lea
