Almost but not exactly correct. You are correct about the mess but there is still fluid going to the cooler when cold. The colder fluid doesn't flow as easily so there is more volume being pushed thru the bypass valve. This is the same principle as the oil pump relief valve in your engine. Does the oil bypass the engine bearings and go straight back to the oil pan when it is cold?
