6.0L Fuel Filters - Description of Symptoms when clogged
This past weekend I was bombing across the desert when I noticed a mild drop in power. Since it had been raining for an hour I figured that the air filter had become soaked and was not flowing as it should. Few minutes later the power dropped further and the truck slowed from 70mph down to 60mph, it simply would not go over 60mph. Now I’m thinking that maybe one of the turbo hoses has blown off. Pulled over at a rest stop in the pouring rain, popped the hood so I could check the turbo hoses, checked the motor and trans for excess heat, everything OK so I continued down the road to the next town. The motor felt like it was not breathing or not getting enough fuel.
While driving to the next town I looked at the mileage, 74960 miles, my extended warranty expires at 75000. How convenient! Still the truck could not get over 60mph, by the time I reached the next town the rain was gone. This time I was able to tear down the air box and validate that it was not soaked, flowing fine. Decided to remove the two micron filter mounted on top of the motor, all you need is a ½ inch ratchet.
The filter was very dark in color, clearly it was white in color when new. Tried to blow some air through it and discovered that it was more than restrictive.
Just so you know – the motor will only run for thirty seconds without a filter. The filter is used to open a valve/trap that allows the fuel to move into the motor. Stabbed the filter with a ball point pen, buttoned her up – the truck has never run better. Replaced the filters once I got home. The filters had never been replaced.
