Re: Ford to buy or use Cummins in next couple of years?

I wouldn't be bragging on 150,000 miles on a diesel engine. My last truck a gasser had 220,000+ miles and at 6 years old I got nearly $19,000 on trade. (Bought it Oct. 96 new, and traded it Aug. 2002) My truck before that also a gasser, had 273,000+ miles with 0 engine problems on either truck.

It was not my intention to start a Cummins engine bashing session with this post. Frankly I think that they are the most reliable diesel engine out there and no one can tell me any different. My 92 Dodge with a Cummins has 150,000 on it and going strong. My father has an 89 Dodge 1 ton with a Cummins, 307,000 miles on it and he just overhauled the injection pump, only because the seal began to leak fuel. He uses this truck to transport camper trailers up the Alcan highway to alaska where he lives. All told in the family we have six of these engines with not a single major failure to date. I know of no other engine which has been upgraded to 500 horsepower on a regular basis as some Dodge Cummins owners have done. And these 500 horse engines are going out to 350,000 miles before overhaul.

As I indicated before I have witnessed only 2 head gasket failures in 10 years on Cummins products. I have never seen a Cummins with a bad oil leak, some minor ones but nothing to get concerned about. And as to who makes more engines, I was referring to the entire diesel powerplant scene, Navistar does not produce engines for stationary, marine, military, trucking, bussing, and yes even racing applications (only one engine raced, at Indy one year, and yes it finished the race). I cant tell you how many medium duty international delivery trucks I have seen DEAD on the side of the road in the last 4 years.

Now, getting back to the original thread, I would like to hear from anyone WITNESSING a crack in a Cummins engine block in the location I described.

Did you read this one above. Most of what you've been talking about, or quoting others has been the "24 valve Cummins" The "12 valver's" are very reliable. Don't get me wrong, I have a healthy respect for the old IDI's. I'm just partial to the Cummins, but I like the Ford truck body and frame. My .02 cents. Al
