The reason that Ford says it does not work is because the ITBC sends out a pulse periodically to test if the brake circuit is complete (i.e. the trailer brakes are connected and working). With electric/hydraulic trailer brakes, this signal is enought to activate the hydraulic pump, resulting in premature pump wear.

Newer electric/hydraulic brakes systems are designed to work with the newer TBC that send check signals and ignore the pulses. Chances are if the brake system was made in the last year, it will work fine with the ITBC, but check with the system manufacturer.
