I tried something a little different, and it work pretty well (for unloading off the back of a pickup).

I got 2 2x8 (x 8 feet or so). Got the barrel sitting (laid down) in the crack between the bed and tailgate so it wouldnt move. Stuck the boards under the barrel. Rolled the barrel onto the boards, and as the barrel was rolled of the edge off the tailgate (slowly) the boards moved down to the ground. Then you can ease it down, or let 'er roll. I can get a full 55 drum off my pickup by myself this way. It is a little exciting though.
