Check and make sure you don't have a return line or other fuel system leak. Usually when a pump starts going bad it won't start when it's warm. They usually just slowly keep using more fuel and your milage gets worse. I've run Ford diesels for twenty years and I've never had a pump go bad and stop working, the performance just always went downhill. Take a good look and see if there are any other possibilities, usually a long start when they're cold is air getting in the system some where. How many miles on the pump? With diesel today at $3.12 it probably is a good idea to replace it anyway if it has over 125,000 miles.
