TRANSFER CASE FLUID

I,m sure someone can help me with this. On my 1989,f350,crewcab,4x4 I just replaced the transfer case with a remanufactured one. All has gone well until I noticed two fluid fill holes on it. One on the rear and one on the front. The one on the front says "pto fill only" and is approximately 3 inches higher than the one on the rear which is labeled "fill only". The one on the rear is only about 2 inches above the drain plug. When I filled it I filled the rear hole. It only took about 1 1/2 quarts. I asked the guy where I bought it about it and he really did,t make me feel like he knew any more than me. He said that you only needed to fill the"pto" plug if you had power take off as in an extra set of gearing to take power off. HUH?!/?. My thinking was that the pto was the yoke to the front for four wheel drive. Thats why I'm asking you guys. Thanks.
