If you are not locking up the T/C you are over heating the trans fluid. If a sensor goes out on these trans they go into failure mode, do not drive for any length of time (normally burn out the clutches in the T/C). Get the codes read (drivers side near the firewall on the fender is the connector). You need the FIPL, VSS and tack working correctly for the trans to shift. The other place you may want to look at is the solenoid pack connector, they get oxidized over time and the pins do not make good contact.
