figured i'd update, ended up being the wires in the gear selector arm. i talked to my tranny guy and he said to swap the arm and low and behold it solved my problem. i opted to just swap out the arm/button and trim ring instead of trying to salvage the button and ring off the old one but all is well now. he also said if the od was not engaging then the trans was just running as if the od was switched off and if it were a problem then you would tear up your t/c just by hitting the off switch...makes sense to me...
