Re: Emission Recall 06E17 on 2003-2004 6.0L Powerstroke
For 06E17, the EBP sensor is NOT replaced as has been noted.
Some important steps to remember.... during the reprogram, the FICM relay should be removed. Earlier reflashes added a strategy that would have the FICM cycle the injectors during the "Wait to start" phase - the electrical "noise" caused by this function (remember this is 48 volts) can affect data transfer and storage. Removing the FICM relay disables the injector power feed but, since the FICM has a dedicated feed for the computation cicuits, the FICM is still reprogrammed. I've had words with one of my techs for neglecting this step.
After the reflash, my preference for clearing KAM (keep alive memory) is to disconnect the battery grounds for 5 minutes and turn the headlight switch on for this time period.
After the KAM is cleared, cycle the key ON - OFF - ON - OFF before starting the unit. This step is important. Start the truck and leave it idle... the VGT map will not learn until after engine oil temp reaches about 160F. Those with a scan tool that can monitor PIDs can watch VGT_LRN - once the VGT map is learned, this PID will toggle from "NO" to "YES".
For 06E17 strategy to perform as intended, it is vital that there are no boost related concerns present. We are told that intake and exhaust modifications can affect this strategy but I work on so few modified trucks that I can't say one way or the other.
If a shop replaces the EBP on a truck that has either had 06E17 performed or qualifies for 06E17, the warranty nazis will find it and the shop will be charged back.
