Diesel here is about 20-25 cents more a gallon than gas, so gas is about 7% cheaper. My V10 F450 gets 30% less fuel economy than my Diesel F450. So it still costs me over 20% more to drive the V10. Needless to say the V10 is parked most of the time!Lloyd

On the other hand, The 2000 F450 XL diesel I traded for my 05, I paid 42,800 for brand new with all towing equipment. I traded in in march 05, & got 23,000 in trade. I just bought the 03 V10 F450 XL (48,000 new) in june 06, from a dealer, for $20,000. So I lost $19,800 on a 5 year old 7.3, & they lost (the company who traded the V10 in)$30,000 on trade for the 3 year old V10 (the dealer paid $18,000). In this case the V10 lost $10,000 more, in 2 years less! The trucks had 114K(00 PSD) + 123K(03 V10) miles. I bought the V10, because for my intended purpose, I saved 10 grand on what a PSD rollback would've cost me. By the way I seen gas here today at $2.57, diesel at $2.61. So much for the 40+ cents theory. And not to rub it in, but if paying the $4500 up front, gets me $10,000 at the end, ALL my new trucks will be diesels. But I'm smiling all the way to the bank on the 10 grand I saved buying the used gasser! I just wouldn't want to take the big hit from selling a used V10 that I bought new. Lloyd

This isn't really a good comparison. It looks like you're assuming the original owner of the V10 paid sticker (unlikely). Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I'm not sure how you can get a PSD for $42K and a V10 for $48K (both XL's). Granted they are different years, but something doesn't add up. Do they have similar equipment? Without knowing what the original owner of the V10 paid you can't accurately calculate their depreciation. I guess you could use the sticker price for your PSD and compare it to the sticker price for the V10 in this example.

According to www.chicagogasprices.com, Avg for unleaded is $2.54, and diesel is $2.91. Not quite $0.40/gal, but close. That $2.61 you mentioned would be the place to buy it, because the next closest price listed was $2.79, and the next 13 listings are $2.85 or higher.

Not throwing stones, but selective choice of numbers has misled a lot of people.

Sounds like you've done well with your PSD purchase, especially if you're buying your diesel fuel at the lowest priced stations. I ran your numbers from your earlier post in this thread through my gas vs diesel spreadsheet, and at $5000 price difference you start saving money with the PSD at around 3.5 years, assuming you drive 500 miles a week and all the maintenance costs are identical. (2.54/gal gas, $2.74/gal diesel, 17mpg PSD, 11.9mpg V10). It changes a bit if you're only getting 15 with the PSD and 10.5 with the V10, 3.25 years. It comes down below 3 years at 13 mpg for the PSD and 9.1 for the V10. If the percentage spread between the economy of the 2 motors stays the same, your payback will be less as the PSD uses more fuel - this is because the difference is now a larger percentage of what you spend. Drive more miles and the payback time comes down accordingly, but the payback amount doesn't change until you've passed the breakeven point, or you sell. Then you're back to the depreciation calculation, but don't forget to include what you spent while you drove it...
