Engine running temp?

I recently took my truck on a long run (for me that is) and the temp gauge they usually runs on the low side of the dash gauge (just below the N on normal) now barely registers.

I pulled into the driveway leaving the engine running, popped the hood and used my thermal heat gun to check the upper radiator hose temp.

It was at 140 degrees.

Is the standard engine temp supposed to be 180ish or not?

I thought I replaced the thermostat a couple years ago with the factory normal temp range and would just replace it, but it was not a simple 5 minute swap.

Looking thru my OEM manuals for a place to connect a 3-5 amp draw for a fuel pump, but getting frustrated....

1. where is a quick and easy to get at / down-n-dirty, ignition key-activated power source (so I can get running)?

2. what is the BEST way to get a power source (long-term solution)

For #1, I'm looking at the glow-plug controller (with an inline fuse)...

Thanx

7.3L engine is running away some...!

Hello... upon a cold start at -30, on my 91 F250, the engine takes 5-10 seconds of turning over before it starts to fire off (i think I have an air leak in the fuel system, but only happens when its below 0), then once its running, it idles up to 1000rpm, then 15 seconds later its 1100rpm, then its 1200rpm, then its 1300rpm...... if i disconnect the cold advance and the fast idle, it will drop to around 600-700...
is it normal for the cold advance to raise the rpms up to 1300, or do I have something else going on?

I have a 750 watt block heater, a 1000 watt circulation coolant heater, 300 watt oil pan heater, 150 watt trans pan heater, and 1.5amp battery charger all going to get her started... it sucks some juice...

Another controller issue.

Mine is a 94 idi factory turbo. I have been reading hundreds of postings on this subject. I have changed out my plugs to Beru's. The old Delphi's looked good and were showing .5/.6 on the ohmmeter. I cleaned my battery posts well, checked my relay for output, charged my batteries to perfection and cleaned the controller ground. The wts light still goes off in 4/5 seconds in 40 degree weather. I have hooked a trouble light to the glowplugs and the relay is putting out good voltage.

I still don't get my motor to start with out extra cranking and then running very rough for a minute or so.

If I jump the relay and get current to the plugs for 10 seconds it will start and run rough for a bit and then clean up. If I plug it in it will start right up and run smooth.

Three times in a month I have turned the key on and got no response at all. No light or ammeter drop or clicking. But the next time I tried it it would cycle.

My question now is do you guys think it is time for a new controller? I have one on order and it seems like the piece of the puzzle. What do you think?

I posted this by mistake in 94/97 7.3.

I changed my oil with the Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w30 oil, when I was
at the store I thought it said diesel on it but, now, after it's already in the
engine, I cannot find the word diesel anywhere on the bottle.
It doesn't specify gasoline on the bottle either. It's this stuff
Castrol USA - Castrol GTX High Mileage (http://www.castrol.com/castrol/extendedsectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=82915476&contentId=7053315)

So, I do want to change it but, is this something that can wait a bit, or is it
a "do it now or die" sort of thing?

My truck is a '91 F250 7.3L IDI 4x4

Thanks for any suggestions

The high here has been a whoping 0-3 degrees here lately in Alaska, and conveniently my block heater decided to take a crap last week. I have a new can style heater to put in but I cant start the truck. The glow plugs are fully functioning and the diesel here is already pretreated for the cold weather. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get this thing started so I can get this to the shop so I can put my new heater in. I really need to get this thing fixed soon before it warms up and snows this weekend because my other vehicle is def no DD and does not do well in the snow. Any help is appreciated.

89 F-350 7.3L with turbo.

Backstory: About a year ago, I towed this truck into the shop as it had been sitting in our pasture and not run for around 4 years. The original problem was old O-rings on the injector tops along with old cracked hoses between them, causing it to drop fuel when sitting. Whoever was driving it at the time would crank it till it started and go where they wanted to go. Then one day the starter finally burned up. I wanted to use the truck, so I brought it in and fixed it. New starter, new glow plugs, new batteries, new o-rings and hoses along with clamps, new fuel filter, oil change, etc. Everything worked fine until it dropped dead when sitting idling about a couple months later. Sat in pasture most of a year since then.

I loaded it up and brought it in the other day, I expected that they ran it out of fuel. The truck is almost full of diesel, but I wasn't getting any fuel to the filter. I pulled the fuel pump and found it seems like it works well, but I am getting no fuel to the fuel pump. I chased it back and found I am getting plenty of diesel to but not through the tank selector valve on the frame, I'm getting one in tomorrow afternoon.

The problem I have is that I ran a hose from a can of diesel beside the truck to the fuel pump and cannot get it to start like this or even smoke out of the exhaust. I've cranked and cranked but get nothing. The fuel filter is full but if I loosen the connection on top of the injectors I am getting no fuel. I'm not positive my pump is pumping well enough. I pulled the hose off the top of it and it pumps plenty but I can stop the flow of diesel with my index finger with little pressure on it. I pulled the outlet hose on the top right that goes to the injectors and it has a steady but tiny stream of low pressure diesel coming out of it when cranking.

Where do I look next?
