Thinking about getting a flatbed

I have had some peeling of the clearcoat on the passenger side of my bed and stopped by the body shop to get a quote on repairs. They recommended a total re-paint of the entire truck (which it probably does need) for $8,000.

After I picked my chin up off the floor, I decided I would look around for a flatbed.

I need recommendations for a steel bed that will fit a SRW. Pics would be great! Also, does anyone know what the going rate for an 8' bed that needs a little clearcoat work would be? I may have one for sale soon.

Thanks

5th wheel rail mounting

I purchased a no drill custom fit 5th wheel rail kit for my 2000 F250.
It has big steel plates that mount outside the frame rails using existing frame holes.
Two of my friends tell me that all of that steel is not necessary.
They have their 5th wheel rails mounted using only the bed bolt holes and grade 8 bolts.
For over 6 years they have pulled their tripple slide 35 ft heavy 5th wheels and have never had a problem.
Their hitches were installed by a local RV/Truck shop that does this type of mounting all the time.
Has anyone seen this type of mounting.
It has worked for my friends, but I am wondering why this isn't done all of the time.

I Seem To Have Problems With My 2003 F-350 Heavy Duty, 7.3. My Truck Is For Working, Not Going To Church. Every 3-4 Months I Seem To Have To Replace The Universal Joints And Upper Support Bearing. I Use The Truck To Haul A 29' Flat Bed With 10,000 To 12,000 Pounds Of Hay Or Deliver Travel Trailers. No Engine Problems, But Have Had Transmission Rebuilt 3 Times. Any Suggestions About The U-joint Problems. I Feel This Is Causing The Transmission Problems. I Have The Trans Flushed Every 50,000 Miles And This Last Time There Was Metal In The Pan And They Said That They Rplaced A "center Bearing".
Any Suggestions.

GVWR with a camper

I was of the impression that GVWR of (say for conversation) an 2001 F250 diesel is 8800#.

Does this rating apply for a camper as well as pin weight if a 5th wheel is towed? I didnt think the rating changed just because of what you tow or haul.

What is the actual wording from a vehicle mfg regarding GVWR?

Oregon weight restrictions for towing

Hi All - Have been doing some research to find out how much weight I can legally tow in Oregon but have not found a solid answer.

From what I have seen the GVWR cannot exceed 26,000lbs. Is this correct?

I will be towing hay across the state with my 08 F450; has anyone had problems with DOT pulling them over or making them weigh while doing cross state runs?

High Capacity Trailer Towing Specs

Ok guys, I've got a tech question for you...

When a 2005-2007 F-550 with an automatic transmission is equipped with the High Capacity Trailer Towing Package, what mechanical changes set the package apart from an F-550 without this option? I know the GCWR jumps from 26,000 lbs. to 33,000 lbs. and the axle ratio is a 4.88:1 limited slip ratio, but what else is there? Springs, shocks, tranny cooler, engine tuning?

I have found a truck that may suit my needs but it lacks this option and I'm curious if I can add the components to equip the truck as if it left the factory that way.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've read lots of forums comparing Fords Chevys and Dodges, but still can't make my mind what would be better for car hauling business. Three average cars plus truck and trailer shouldn't be more than 32k(stay safe with app plates at 32k). I am looking @ f-350 with towboss package, f-550 and several Chevy Silverado 3500. Any ideas what would make more sense? F-350s and Chevy 3500 would give great mpg, but F-550 with a 4.88 rear ratio would handle the weight better.
Thanks for your wise inputs
B.T.W What would be the difference in MPG between F-350 loaded and F-550?
