Hey Sybil, are you hinting that my server is slow?
While you're at it, you might want to mention OPTIMIZATION. If the gif is 3 or 4 MB's it doesn't matter where it is being served from.

I'm not naming names... .but YOUR server is working fine.
If you bring em here, you have to crush them down to 35k or there abouts. If they get much bigger, they don't look right. And the site recommends around 35k or less to avoid slowing the page loading.
Also I know there is an option to turn it off, for those with dialup. I should see that response pretty soon.
For the record I crush BIG pics down to about 35k.
No AV should be more than 10k. My AV is 2.6k.

I'm trying to post an avatar in my signature picture. It works fine directly from the web site where I found it. When I download it and try to link it from my pictures, I keep getting a "Cannot proceed. Improper picture." What am I doing wrong?
How do crush pictures down to a smaller size.

I figured it out. I right clicked on the avatar downloaded in my pictures. Then I clicked on properties and copied the URL from there and pasted it, and it now works!
Now I need to figure out how to crush pictures.

I have not experienced the long load time because of avatars. Maybe because I'm on a cable modem

It's not really a long load time.. it's a hang..as in stuck. trying to get to the site and load the pic, it may be more related to animated gifs than pics... but it does occur. You can actually see the site it's trying to load. When I try to go to the site, it fails to load as well.
I'm on broadband also, so I don't mind long sigs like YOURS...

I don't know about gifs, but for JPEGs, I load it into MS Picture It! (photo editor software), then on the menu bar at the top of the screen I click on "format", then on "resize image". The resize window lets you change both the size and the resolution of the photo. For avatar or even sending a photo by e-mail, a height of between 1 and 2 inches is plenty. So I maintain proportion, then click on the down-arrow button in the resize window to reduce the height until it's 2" or less. The result is a reasonably small file that doesn't take all day to load and transmit for us guys in the sticks with only country dial-up internet access, and yet the folks on the receiving end get a good photo.
