Better shorten those signature lines!

Got an email today from John Morrissey, one of the moderators of FDC, as follows:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR> Sir.

On the ford-diesel web site there is a rule
that the signature line is limited to three lines max. Please adjust yours so that it falls within that three line limit viewed at 800 X 600 lines of resolution.

Thanks in advance.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The instructions for updating my profile say nothing about this rule, and the Forum FAQ says nothing about this rule (unless I'm blind). I've sent an email to John asking for the exact character count that he will permit, so that I know what his standards are. I'm just writing this now so we can all be prepared for the implementation of this ruling.

I guess I'll just have to move my signature to a webpage, and force everyone to pop open another browser window to find out about my twins.

Now I find out that it seems to just be a rule in the works, and apparently I'm one of the first to get cited on this:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR> Yes we are letting all the members know that rule. It has been talked about many times. Jason is working on code to limit it automatically.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Oh joy.

[Signature voluntarily disabled, until I finish rewriting it.]

ptemplin:

This issue first came up in December of 1999. There was a lot of discussion about it then and every now and then since. Here is a link to the first discussion.

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

I have heard of that rule, and thats why you will see alot of people testing their sigs. Although, I agree, It should be in the FAQ or something (if it isn't already) so that new members can see it. I have heard it through word of mouth.

I think its a good rule though. I believe that 3 lines works out to about 175 characters??

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

Why not develope an abbreviation system so that those who want to tout the extras can. It seems so simple, for instance, Western Diesel's Turbo Brake, Ram Air = WDTB, WDRA
or chips with HP. I.E. TTS87 (probably not right HP but for example purposes) Propane systems ATSP (ATS propane), PS2000 (figure that one out), ADSS or ADSD (Advance Diesel Single/Dual)
Get my drift?? It would take very little time for everyone to use these.

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

I also seem to have no problem with the signature length. As long as they don't cut back on the MESSAGE length, I'm OK!!

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

I am a charter member of the Morrissy club. I spent a couple of hours getting my desk top close to where it was after checking my resolution at 800x600 and then back up to where I run it.

It would have been nice if he would have told me all I needed to do was remove the blank line that was between my sign off line and my signature . Teling me that spaces counted is why I checked the resolution .

Hey UTAH or Kevin is my stuff at the bottom leagal, and if not send me a private message as to what I need to do. I don't want to play with the desk top settings again unless I have a major crash. THANK YOU

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

Simply create a test post. Test your signature. When you get it where you want it and it's within the 3 lines, go back into the post using the Edit Post function on the top bar and DELETE the post. Simple

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

Trouly I have my pc set normally at 1024 x 968 pixels of resolution. This works great on a 19" monitor. So I had to change the settings to 800 x600 to see where the sig. ran according to guidelines. I do not know how to do what you suggest. Wish I did Bro. "cause I sure would have.

Thanks for the suggestion I may play around and see if I can do it, But you can bet your " bippy" I ain't gonna hit none of them thar apply boxes!!!

On Edit: Troutly Excuse me I do know how make and delete posts. It is the difference in screen resolutions that throws the smell bad in the soup .

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

I too got that email a week or so ago. I replyed to it "sorry for the mistake, I was not aware of the rule. If I mess up again just let me know." I have been trying to cut it down ever since. My question is how do you know if you are using that screen size or not? I have 17" monitor and when I am on FD I maximize to use the whole screen.

I just edited again trying to get it right.

If Ed's is good mine must be. Because on my screen His is 6 lines and mine is 4.

Re: Better shorten those signature lines!

I had the same e-mail in my inbox this morning. Guess I'll use this as a test post to see if I got it back within 3.
