Can you stick a fork in it?

Maybe it is my personal opinion, but that SETI thing in the "other forum" has run long enough. Mike locks Tim's ? after one day. The fun post about making the story with 1 senctence at a time got shut down soon and it seemed popular amongs everyone. That SETI thing keeps living forever and I can't help believe that it does because Mike started it. My .02 worth.

Re: Can you stick a fork in it?

I think Mike was trying to head off inherent, foreseeable problems with Tim's thread. Plus that same type thread was locked a few months ago.

Obviously, the Humans have met their match. What, do you think all this SETI stuff just happened to show up? Jason and the Moderators (aliens all) have infiltrated the core of Human Americans - yup, Ford truck owners. If you join SETI, they form a link into your computer and into your life. Aliens aren't coming, my friends. They're already here.

Best to y'all

That's exactly why the thread was locked. The best that could have happened with this thread is a bunch more posts saying the same thing that had already been said. The worst was one of our members would have been flamed.

Flames are not conducive to the exchange of information we strive for here. They also would not help our brother member who is feeling a little glum about his treatment as of late. I locked the thread for both reasons. It was not locked because of the precedents, I don't much care about them, to me a thread stands on its' own merits.

As to the SETI thread, the thread is about a team formed of Ford-Diesel.Com members, including our Webmaster. We are identified as such by SETI and will hopefully break into their top 200 teams for clubs. That brings further recognition to this site. I have strived to keep it to a single open thread since its' inception and asked the other members not to spread it across the forums. It has been about 6 months now, and we have maintained that standard. Show me another popular topic that is allowed here that has limited itself to a single, open thread.

There will always be disagreements about thread closings and which topics are allowed. I think Jason has a good balance here, as is demonstrated by the continued growth of the site.

Re: Can you stick a fork in it?

Mike,
One popular thread was that story line of one sententence long. the moderator that opened it also closed it for no reason other than he thought it went long enough. It wasn't getting vulgar or trying to sell anything. My feeling on this SETI thing is it has gone on long enough and I think it isn't at all fair to others. Just because it has the interest of a certain HIGH ranking people on this site is the only reason I think it has been allowed to run as long as it has. In your own words "Six Months" in any other post would have been shut down LONG ago if it didn't have certain interest to certain people. I don't think it is fair at all..... My .02 cents worth1

Re: Can you stick a fork in it?

Dakota Renegade:

I remember the thread you're referring to. I happened to like the thread as well, but I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. Why? Because it was pure silliness. Granted, a lot of fun, but still pure silliness. The Webmaster is opposed to silliness on this site. Witness the Bilge Rat debacle - fun, but silly. Not something the Boss likes here. He wants this to be a site devoted to the serious discussion of Diesel trucks, Ford Diesel trucks in particular. We are fortunate to have the Other Forum at all.

As far as long-running threads go, I think you could aggregate the gun control threads and consider them as a long-running thread. Little changes between them, and there are usually a couple or more at any given time. The same goes for Clinton bashing, Bush bashing, or any number of other political or environmental threads.

Re: Can you stick a fork in it?

Mike,
Maybe the color of my sky is a different shade of blue than every one elses... but to me the SETI thing is by fair not a serious post. Kind of double standards, if you think about it.
It is Jason's site, I agree... But live by the sword and die by the sword.

Re: Can you stick a fork in it?

I think the "Occupation" thread is the longest thread. Every once in a while it rears its head too.

Dakota:

Won't argue with you on that other than to say the science behind SETI is very serious.

As for the color of the sky, that's the beauty of the Other Forum, lots of differing opinions.

Take care, my friend.
