Re: Chip Test Info

I just posted an Excel spreadsheet with the raw numbers in our downloads section. Feel free to download and check it out. I wouldn't make a buying decision based on that data quite yet though. We will explain why we did some things that we did in the full article in the next couple of days.

All the numbers in the spreadsheet are taken at 65 mph. I would expect the numbers to go up quite a bit at lower speeds (this follows what we saw on the dyno for the chips that we could pull down to 55 mph without overheating the EGTs).

More later.

Re: Chip Test Info

Jason,
Was the Hypermax chip you tested a Max chip 300 or the Max chip 330 ? Did you get torque readings for the different chips? Either max or at your 65mph test speed?
Thanks

Re: Chip Test Info

I'm assuming the Hypermax chip was the 300 version. It didn't say for sure though. I believe they recommend other mods for the 330 chip. I hope to talk to Max tomorrow to find out for sure.

The only measurements we have are horsepower. You can calculate torque based on horsepower and rpms though. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it should get you close.

Re: Chip Test Info

I'm having trouble opening your spreadsheet file. I don't know if it's my software or your file. Any chance of posting another file in some other format? Anyone else having trouble with the file?

Re: Chip Test Info

Looks to me like TTS, Hypermax, and BD Power X won hands down. The TTS and Hypermax chips where strong in both tests making them the all-around winners in my book. I bet they'll be getting lots of orders on Monday

Another thing I found interesting is that the truck made less power with the boost tube installed. Doesnt surprise me.

Re: Chip Test Info

I'm not sure if I would say they won "hands down". If all you look at is max hp at 65 mph, they did. The important thing to remember is that these results only show hp/egt at one specific rpm and speed. We were indeed impressed by both the Hypermax and BD Power chips.

None of the chips have actually been run on the street except for the BD Power X Chip and Western Diesel Turbo Chip. I have been running the WD chip for a couple of months. We put the BD chip in after the test was over to see what it felt like. I think the test almost brings up more questions than it answers. I'm even more anxious to test them all on the street now. Just FYI, the seat of the pants street test between the BD Power and WD chip was that the WD seemed to come on a little faster while the BD definitely made more top end. I think we will find this to be true among the majority of the chips. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I believe the street test will answer a lot of questions though.

Re: Chip Test Info

My software must be screwed up. I did manage to get a look at the first page of the spread sheet using the Windows "Quick View" function. No RPMs were given on that page. What gear did you run in and what was the RPM at 65mph?

Thanks, and good luck sorting out the results.

Re: Chip Test Info

Jason,
Quick question. Are you going to run a street test with the 16 chips? If you are when?

Re: Chip Test Info

The tests were run in 5th gear (1:1), I'll have to check the RPMs and give them to you, we didn't write it down during the test.

We will be running a street test with most of the chips. We'll definitely be towing with them, I'm not sure if we'll be testing empty performance yet or not.

What other tests and info would be useful to you? I can see us possibly putting on an exhaust and testing again in the future.

Fuel consumption is always a concern, although I don't know how you could accurately check that without lots of hours per chip.

To be honest, I'm real disappointed you were able to only get one data point on the limited number of chips that kept the EGT within safe limits. I'd like to see runs at 200 RPM increments from about 1500 RPM to about 2900 RPM for each chip. Note the power at which 1300 EGT is reached. This kind of data would give a real useable power curve. I know you'd probably have to be on the dyno for a week, but that's what I'd like to see.

As far as seat of the pants tests, hook a heavy trailer and climb a long steady grade. Make the trailer heavy enough so that max EGT is reached at a reasonably slow speed. Record the max pulling speed at 1300 EGT for each chip. It might also be interesting to see what kind of hp you'd get testing acceleration unloaded with a G-tech, although this can get pretty hard on the truck.
