So maybe I'm on the list too...
Whats with the name calling anyway ?...
According to the page title....This is the comments (Discussion of TheDieselStop.Com itself. What do you like or don't like, kudos and complaints, comments and suggestions.)page
There is a problem (with the server I would guess ),,,
I visit 6-8 different forums in this format , this is the only one that ,9 out of 10 page loads ,,that just sits there waiting for advertiser header to load after the browser says done (3- 15 seconds )
If I was retired ,& had nothing else to do ,, I guess it wouldn't bother me (no reference to anyone retired , in particular)
As Grampy Jim says ,, don't paint with too wide a brush

The search bots contribute big numbers to the total. Currently there are 185 members, 485 Guests and 452 search bots viewing the site. The search bots are included in the "guests" total shown.

The search bots contribute big numbers to the total.
Search bots have been active for years, so it's not just the search bots that are causing an increase in viewers. But since only members can post, I don't get too excited about how many guests are logged on - bots or otherwise.
What time interval is being used to determine the number of viewers, ...
Real time. No interval.
Go to the Forums index page and scroll down to near the bottom under "What's going on". I just did that and there were 227 members signed in. Then I refreshed the screen and there were 229 members signed in.

...and has the time interval been changed?
I don't know, but I doubt it. At least not since the website changed over to VBulletin.
I just took a quick look at the list (at 11:05am), and it is still counting activity from 10:14am. It would seem that the time interval is set for something in the neighborhood of 45 minutes, or possibly longer.
As a comparison, I keep the interval on my forums set at 10 minutes. If I wanted it to appear busier for some reason (I choose not to), I could change it to a higher number. That interval can make a huge difference.
I never paid attention to what interval was used here in the past, so I don't know if it has been increased. It is just something to think about when people comment on how busy a site is.

So if there is a time interval between updating the system counter, it's a very short time interval. It's just as easy to program a real time counter/display as one that checks periodically, so it would be dumb to have other than a real-time counter doing the update of that screen.
Smokey, where it says: "currently active users," click on it. That will give you the details. Look at the "time of activity" column (whatever it says there), and look at the times. The list will update itself at a fixed (but adjustable) interval of something like a minute. The data, however, is a rolling interval. That is what I'm talking about. It maintains a cache, or list, of users for some time period, apparently 45 minutes or so (maybe longer), before it drops them off.
As an example, I have my forums set to drop users after 10 minutes. If someone is logged in on CVN, and steps away from their keyboard for 11 minutes, they are dropped from the list until they start navigating again. Here at TDS, they appear to be counted for a much longer period of time.
This is how that box is labeled in UBB.threads, which is what I am using:
"Who's Online Timeframe:
Users will be listed as online if they have visited within this timeframe (in minutes). "
An Administrator can set that time for anything he choses to. The longer the "Timeframe," the more users appear to be on. Again, I never paid attention to Jason's timeframe, so I have no idea what it was before.

But someone could hypothetically extend the time frame in order to make more people appear online. I would assume that this might aid in selling "sponsorships". I wouldn't know though, I am not into that kind of thing. And it is beyond me why someone would pay to sponsor a site where the google ads are larger in size than your paid banner - and at a minimum triple them in quantity... But thats just me...

I would imagine supporting vendors sponsor the site because a lot of members attempt to give their business to them. I have all the ads shut off but when I need something I will certainly try to give my business to supporting vendors.

Smokey "whines: about .1% (yes, one tenth of one percent) as much as the resident habitual whiners.
Now, I am not taking sides, but I DO know how to recognize real whiners.
