I have posted this before and will do it again. Firefox is a great browser and with the ad block add on, speed will be as fast as any other site. If you just have to have the trendy browser, IE, just download a program IE-Pro and you will have the same thing. IE7Pro - The Ultimate Add-On for Internet Explorer
Oh and by the way, the search not working is nothing new, I haven't been able to get it to work for several years before this site was sold. Wasn't fixed then and still don't work. I will admit, it would be nice to have one that worked but, oh well.

I used to use the search all the time when I first joined. It wasn't the best but it still worked?

Forums search works fine for me. Have you tried it lately?
I just now scrolled up and clicked on the search button, then searched on "cavitation" without changing any of my default search criteria (all open forums for posts in the last year, etc.) and got at least 11 pages of hits. Normally I'll click on advanced search and search on a term plus a username as the poster. I just now did advanced search and searched on cavitation and my username for the past year in all forums. I got 9 hits, with the oldest on 22 Dec '07. That sounds about right. I probably haven't included the word "cavitation" in more than 9 posts during the past year.
How much better do you want it to work?
What didn't work until recently was the archive search. But the admins say it works fine now, and they're working on a friendlier user interface so you don't have to be a computer guru to use it.
I just checked archive search (site navigation block on the home page) and a decent user interface is not yet there, but I searched on "cavitation" without filling in any of the blanks and I had 3,641 hits. So it works, but needs some polishing to make it more user friendly.
And the archive search resulted in only one hit on TheDieselStop and the rest were on Ford-Diesel.com - our "old" name.

Some have more fun whining than they do searching.
