I don't allow?

OK, I re-read the rules posted by Jason. I am posting this in the correct forum according to Kevin. Here is what Kevin said when I asked a question about the rules regarding targeting one person on the"other" forum and he shut down the thread.
"I don't allow any one person to become the target of any thread. That issue was settled during a previous dustup that people might not be aware of. " OK, so how exactly does that translate? What exactly am I not aware of. Give me a scenario. The thread on the "Other" site was purely an informational thread basically wondering why so many threads were deleted over a short period by Kevin. He was not targeted. I don't want to break any rules, I just want to know what the actual rules are other than the ones posted by Jason at the top of each forum. Are there any hidden rules I am not aware of because they are not posted by Jason? I am addressing this post to Jason for Jason to answer. I am not being beligerent or uncooperative, I just want to know ALL the rules before I post another message. If Kevin is given a free hand to delete posts at will, then I need to know that information as well.

Re: I don't allow?

Since the question concerns me directly, I'll also answer in addition to Jason.

The incident that I referenced concerned a previous member of this site. He was very colorful and a trifle eccentric. However, one of his eccentricities was continual posting on a particular musical group, to the point where many members were annoyed and a thread was started to the effect of whether this person should be allowed to keep posting on that one subject.

I saw the thread and decided to react by offering my opinion on the subject. I don't even remember what my opinion was. However, Jason locked that thread and made the statement that threads targeting a particular member were not appropriate.

I blew it that day and took the lesson. Jason never tasked me about it but I knew I let him, the site, and the member in question down by letting the issue be personal, not business. I've tried to not let that happen again.

There are some issues that have arisen that are not codified in the rules but have come up in regard to a specific incident, so you won't find everything in the rules. A lot of what a moderator has to do is use the rules as a guideline to how the site owner wants his site to run and use his own best judgment about how to achieve that. When we get it wrong, as I did in the incident in question, it is called to our attention in some way. Believe you me, having the Boss lock a thread you have participated in is very very embarrassing for a moderator and I work very hard at making certain that doesn't happen.

This one time, it did. I took the lesson and have applied it since.

Re: I don't allow?

Not only that, but I prefer not to discuss specific moderations on the forums at all.

Also, our rule has always been to ensure that neither political or gun control threads go overboard in the Other forum. It has been getting to the point lately that the number of political threads is getting too high. Kevin and I have both been locking them to cut down on the number of open political discussions going on at one time.

I do need to add that to the rules for the Other forum. Note that our main rules that you agree to when you setup an account actually specifies only one open political thread at a time. We've been lax in enforcing that and will probably never enforce it that strictly, but I do think things have gone a little too far the other way lately.

Also, the moderators have free will to do what they think is necessary in keeping with the purpose of this site. If they do something I don't approve of, I let them know via e-mail or on our moderator forum.

Re: I don't allow?

Is it feasible for moderators to do their jobs anonymously? I don't see what difference it makes who locked or deleted a thread.

If it was done unfairly the member can always post an inquiry. It seems to me that some of the moderators are continually having to justify or explain their actions.

Just a thought, not a question.

Re: I don't allow?

Kevin and or Jason,

I think the thread being referred to was one of mine. I want to clarify that I did not and would not start complaining or piling on ANY moderator !! somehow the replies seemed to infer that I was complaining about my thread being locked, not so. it was just a general statement saying that Kevin has been very busy in the last few days with either locking or deleting a large amount of threads and that he should be paid overtime for all his work. I never (atleast I dont think) insinuated anything about being angry or upset about it. I have only had 2 issues with TDS trheads since I have been a member. one was a racist post regarding Mexicans which I quietly alerted Kevin about and he took care of it and the other was a thread that was moved by LarryM and I asked a why in the "News,Comments" forum Larry quickly answered my question and I thought it was over. but that thread turned into a beat up the Moderator thread so I was asked by a Moderator to send PM's with questions like that and I have done that ever since.

on this the RheanMan and I agree totally. if one of my threads get locked or zapped it was for a reason and I dont/wont take it personally and I dont get offended very easy especially not by something like that

as for the Bundo, I was taking a vacation from TDS when he got the boot so I was/am unaware of any unspoken rule that says not to mention him or the B.G's but if there is thats fine too !! just let me know I wont mention him again. I dont want any post of mine to turn into a moderator bashing session so maybe the one in question should be zapped and not just locked. I happen to enjoy very much coming home from work and dialing in to the "other" forum because it makes me laugh and I can forget about all the stress of everyday life if not just for a short time so guys let me know if mentioning the B$%^&os name is taboo and I will cease and decist immediatley.

Thanks for the great site (even though you have cost me several thousand dollars) and keep up the good work. I know you have been very laxed in the "other" forum and I hope it will stay that way

Thanks
Mike

on edit: after re-reading the post in question title "wow Kevin sure has been Busy" I cant see why others would think I was trying to do anything other than state a fact and tell Kevin to keep up the good work

Re: I don't allow?

The "racist" Mexican post was mine. It was not in any way supposed to be anything but a joke and I did not mean to offend anyone by it. Beings as I am about half mexican you could consider it making fun of myself. Some things are getting out of hand I agree, and my time spent here will diminish, but guys we are pushing things a little. It is Jasons site and a dang good one and his moderators are doing a pretty decent job (with the exception of Kev) JUST KIDDING. Kev has his hands full at times and tho we have argued I dont take it personal.

My skin is not that thin and it seems that you cant say anything anymore without someone getting offended. If a joke cant be taken as a joke, then we are definantly in trouble as humans and friends.

PS I am also a little over weight, so no "fat jokes".

Re: I don't allow?

You might as well just go and close the "other" forum like one thread was stating. If the mods are all of the sudden going to run it by the book then there are probably 75% of the threads in the "other" forum that could be closed because of some "breakage of the rules". Just close the damn thing. It's getting to the point were a good subject can't even start to be discussed without a mods "personal guidelines" closing it. What a joke!!! Re: I don't allow?

I for another hope that the OTHER forum stays. Yes, there are many questionable threads, but when you read one like THIS , you can understand the importance of this forum to many, many of the TDS family. I say family, brotherhood, club... They all work because many of us here feel a bond with one another due to this site. So when one of us needs to express his grief or concern or happiness, this is one of the first places we go. Don't let a good thing go.

This is a prime example of the childish nonsense that gets threads closed. Someone disagrees and then the another has to have the last word.

Quite prophetic. This is not the sort of thing we want to continue. So, this one is done as well.
