idea for the moderators on close'n and deleting threads

ok first off let me say that hopefully i am not overstepping my bounds here and i am just trying to add my 2 cents. also let me say this IS a great web site and the guys on here are great too, they give there ideas, experiance and knowledge freely. but it seems that the moderators are starting to pack up and get very very defencive. i'm going to use the tread about the open ait filter that was deleted cause there was mention of a group sale in there, which is not allowed, the writed was sent an email saying it was deleted. insted fo just deleting it, why not send the writer a notice saying that her is in violation of the rule, tell him what he did wronge, and ask him to modify his post, OR it will be deleted. that post was very very informative and was a sham to see it delete. i for one have not read all the rules on here and i don't thing anyone really has and if they did they might have missed something or miss understood there. it's just a though, this is a nice site and a fun site but it's start'n to get ugly, i don't like seeing good threads shut down because someone overlooked a rule or forgot about something. please take this into consideratoin. thanks for your time and thanks for the great site too. Re: idea for the moderators on close'n and deleting threads

Well, I'm open to ideas on this since I don't much enjoy closing threads (people get very excited about that). But here's the prob:

I see a thread that needs closing because it violates a rule of some sort. I write a note to the person. That person does not answer his or her email. Now, I wait a day or two to see if there is a response. Meanwhile, other folks see that I'm not reacting to a rules violation and some start figuring that they can do the same thing. Now I've got more headaches. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (little Timmy is down a well AGAIN) the original post has not responded. Sometimes, I write someone and they don't get around to their email for days. However, I have to keep a note on which threads I've marked for deletion, by which days to ensure I don't close them without giving someone a chance to respond, which means a logistical nightmare.

And some threads need closing PRONTO!

I just don't think it would work. If everyone stood by their computer and posted their email address for the moderators to send them messages (not everyone does) and responded immediately, it could work. But that is not the way of it.

No problem with discussing the technical issues of the mod and no problem writing the mod up for an article for everyone to permanently see it.

Re: idea for the moderators on close'n and deleting threads

kevin thanks for the reply, i totally understand where your come'n from and you guys do a great job, i don't know exactly how you moderators work this thing. if you all watch the entire board or if you are assigned to a certain section or what. you mentioned that you send the violator an email and the other see your not do'n you job and step in maybe you caould some how "freeze" the thread for a few day instead of deleting it. then if it's not corrected you can delete it. oh well i'm just putt'n my 2 cents in and maybe an idea can come out of one of my crazy ideas. it's seems that a few bad apples spoil it for the one guy that try'n to help sometimes and doesn't know the rules to a "T". you guys are do'n a great job. PLEASE don't feel that i am trying to back'n you into a corner. i don't want to start think'n of the moderators as the small town cop try'n to make a name for himself. thanks again sparky

Well, right now my name is Mud!

The way we could do what you say is to lock the thread. I'll offer it up to the other mods to see what they say.

I don't think you are backing me into a corner. It is just business and questioning the moderation on this site is always a legitimate topic. No worries.

Kevin
WOW that last post was ONLY 5 LINES you must really be feeling bad. That is the shortest response I have ever seen you post. If it will make you feel better, I appreciate you efforts (I think I just developed a nervous twitch) to keep this site clean and tidy. And just for the record your name has always been mud with me

Re: idea for the moderators on close'n and deleting threads

I have to "ditto" Kevin's first post in this thread.

It would be nice if the offending poster would edit his or her thread, but frequently, we have no good way of contacting them. If we lock the thread, the offender cannot edit the post, so that is really not an option.

Like Kevin, I really hate it when I have to edit, delete, or lock a post or thread. It's something that goes with the "job", but it is an unpleasant task. It's not something done lightly.

Thanks to all of you that have voiced support, and thanks to all of the members who have made this site what it is.

Mike
