Question Links to old threads not working?

When I am reading a post that has a link to an old thread, and I click on the link, I get a box saying I don't have permission to view that page. But, If I can find that thread via search, I can read it. What's up with that?

Send a message via AIM to Steve Spaulding
The addresses changed with the software change, so the old links have the wrong address now.

The link you clicked probably referred to a deleted thread (still actually in the forums, but in a restricted section).

Old links usually just redirect to the home page instead of where they're supposed to go. Trying to fix them is a giant PITA, since there's no post # reference that crossed over with the conversion from UBBthreads.

This happens to me with all threads, even Larry's Little Secrets. Is it just me, or does this effect everyone?

Larry's Little Secrets are "old threads", i.e., posted before January 2008. So when you click on one of the links in his posts, you get the home page or the forums index page, but not the place Larry meant for you to go.

To reconstruct all his links so they will work under VBulletin now would be a massive job for someone with moderator privileges. Larry is still a member, and he posted a few days ago. so if enough people asked him, maybe he would be willing to accept moderator prividleges again so he could update his Little Secrets.

If you want you can "back door" the old forums from HERE and then go down to the van section and get into Larry's Little Secrets. It isn't the easiest way to do it but you can at least get to them.

What Bugman said. That will work for at least a little longer. Back in January, the new administration said they will leave the old UBBThreads database intact for a few months - until they are sure the conversion is complete. Then they will delete the old database. Well, this is almost the middle of May, so a "few months" is past. So you can expect that database to disappear any day now. In the meantime, the following link should work to get into Larry's Little Secrets, and the links within those posts should work too.

New little secrets thru 07/30/05 - TheDieselStop.Com Forums

Smokey..tks. for link. Yeah, also lost alot of my old saved threads prior to site chg. Althou some link's still works. If I understand you correctly even those will eventually be gone. I shudda printed out all that valuable info. Anyhow...

Have found old TDS threads thru goggle. Use key word & TDS, but slow going & PITA. Don't really know how many threads google has, but seen a bunch. Maybe those will continue to be stored by google or will they? Hmmmm!

Unfortunately, even the links in the old forums don't work correctly now. Most just bump you to the current home page.

I've been fixing links in Larry's Little Secrets thread, but like Smokey said, it's a MASSIVE undertaking, and the only saving grace is that Larry's links also have the OP and date. Most of his links were to archived threads.

I've also run into a snag on some of the longer posts being too long to be edited. The Admin team has been asked about that. Even if that gets sorted out, it will be a LOOOONG time before I can get them all done.

Archive search works (look on the left side of the home page for the link) so until I can make some more progress, jot down the OP, date and title of the thread and use the archive search. If you don't find it there, try search in the active threads (leave out the short words, like "the" and "of" because the search routine chokes on those.

Why not do a little "moderator shuffling" and bring back Larry and have Larry do Larry's little secrets.

You asked the same thing back in January, and Larry answered, in effect, "No thanks".

Larry's Secrets - then scroll way down to LarryM's post.

A moderator on TheDieselStop is an unpaid volunteer. Before the admins can make someone a moderator, that someone has to volunteer. And Larry hasn't volunteered lately.

Larry's original registration several years ago was deleted at Larry's request. So he disappeared for a coupla years. But after the new administration took over in January, Larry registered again under his old username, which was still available. Diesel Forum - The Diesel Stop.com - View Profile: LarryM

I'll have to change that statement. I was on the old forums a bit ago and at least the links to the archives are working.
