Moderator over kill

Whats the deal with so many topics being closed?
If we have a topic about a woman beating her kid on video tape it gets locked.
If we have a topic that mentions bilge rats it gets locked.
If a member has the word sexy in the name they are told to change it.
Pretty soon you wont be able to post a topic if it mentions a problem with your truck.
I am surprized we can still tell jokes here...Can't we???

JMO but I don't think it was the topic of beating the kid that got that thread locked. I'd venture to guess it was when the comments turned to suggestions of proper punishment ( which I didn't totally disagree with )

I missed the topic on bilge rats, my loss no doubt.

As far as the name sexy being used. I see the point. If I use the name "perfect stud" I expect them to request I change it no matter how nice of a 2x4 I am.

I'm pretty sure we can still post truck problems. They do seem to be pretty lenient about the topic not being in the correct forum too.

I'm another user of this site like you but you can indeed tell jokes and they don't even have to be funny. This is a family site and common sense needs to be used.

I've learned a great deal from this place. Things that I otherwise would have never known.
All and all I think they do a pretty good job.
Anyway, that's what I think.

Re: Moderator over kill

I locked the thread about the woman beating her child. I left it open until people started getting creative about the punishment they'd like to inflict. That has no business on the website.

The bilge rat business simply takes up too much storage and bandwidth for stuff that is better handled in a chat room.

The other stuff I wasn't involved in, so I can't comment.

Re: Moderator over kill

I have read several posts on this topic for almost a year, and I was hoping to see a reason as to why there is so much compaining about threads being locked, having to change user names, etc.. and I still have not seen one legitimate answer yet.
Get used to it. This is not your site. It belongs to someon else who has dished out the bucks for the equipment, took the time to design it, and maintains it. So either play by the rules, or go somewhere else. I know I won't make many friends with this reply, but enough is enough! There have been a few good people with great info to offer and have actually helped me out with more than a few questions & problems that I have had, that are now gone due to this, and that, unfortunately, is the worst part. But it seems to me that these people would rather quit just to prove a point and leave this forum, than to stay and go by the rules that were posted for all to see. And if a moderator deems it necessary to lock a thread, that is his perogative. Like one moderator put it in his sig "An Administrator on this site is a member, just like you're a member, and his opinions are no more valid than yours. So it's okay to disagree with me on truck subjects" so I take that to refer to trucks, not to the decisions made for the good of the forum.
Sorry guys if you don't agree with me, but that is my $.02 only. Like the old saying goes: "Why can't we all just get along?"

Re: Moderator over kill

I think Mark basically covered it. Without strict rules, these forums wouldn't be nearly as useful in my opinion. I find it hard to search many other similar sites for good information simply because topics aren't properly organized, there is too much fluff, etc. We've been working with these rules for over five years now and I think it works extremely well.

Re: Moderator over kill

flammin a friend tipped me to take a look at this tread. i don't hang out on this site much anymore. basically if you have anything to say against a moderator or jason or his site forget it you won't get anywhere. don't complain or question. you will get shut down right away. there are alot of rules and ways that things are done on here that alot of folks don't like but they put up with it. as i was basically told if i don't like it leave and start my own site up. well i did leave only to come back now and then when someone tells me that there is something interesting or someone is need'n my help. other than that i ave gone back to turn'n wrenches and keep'n to myself. if you speak up you will be out gunned plain and simple. it's unfortunate but i guess it's jasons site. so his ball his rules. i know alot of guys that have gone to another site where it is a little lighter and more layed back. good luck and enjoy this is an informative site.

Re: Moderator over kill

Sparky,

The thing about your argument is that our user numbers and traffic levels show completely different from what you are saying. For every person like you who doesn't like how we do things, there are many more that do. As bad as it is to say, I would rather keep the users who understand the rules and follow them than change the rules just to suit a small minority. Each rule that we have in place is there for a reason .. usually based on past experience with other problems.

Your accusation that you can't disagree with the moderators is completely false. Topics and posts aren't moderated based on the user, they are moderated based on content. If a certain user is always posting outside our rules, it may look like we are only moderating that user, but that isn't true. It's just that the user in question can't follow the rules. If you see a situation where you think otherwise, you should let me know. Be advised though that I trust my moderators to do the right thing and don't believe one would do this.

Re: Moderator over kill

Very well said Jason and MarkW - it is for these reasons why I like the site so much.

Keep up the good work!!

Re: Moderator over kill

Jason and Mark have said exactly what I was thinking. If you want to see what an unmoderated site is like take a look at this site about the idiot and his Lexus and you will see what happens when there is no control. These guys are abusive to each other and the language would make a sailor blush. You won't see any of that on this site and that is probably one reason that there are 24,750 registered members to this site. Maybe there have been a few that have had their feelings hurt for whatever reason that choose not to come back, and then some that say they have left but keep lurking, but the numbers don't lie and there is plenty of usage on this site. I'm like Jason, you go to some of the other sites and you have no idea what you will read when you open up a thread.

I spend way too much time on this site reading all of the good stuff about my truck, and also, about the other trucks on the boards. I especially like the "Other" forum, but I don't dwell on the threads that get locked up or whatever. Get over it, it isn't like somebody stole your birthday or anything. Don't take it personally and learn from your mistakes.

I'll yield the soapbox to the next gentleman, or lady that wishes to espouse their feelings.

Re: Moderator over kill

If you don't like the rules get out of the sand box..... The moderators do a very good job when it comes to being fair and still keeping the site open for allowable discussions..

This site is for us to use , not abuse ...

Maybe I'll add - people that always whine about moderators to the list in the Gripe thread

Re: Moderator over kill

Couldn't agree more. In fact the moderators on this board are the best. That's why they're here rather than on another board.

Re: Moderator over kill

Yes,,,the rules are not that bad,,there is no reason to get upset with them,,the rules are posted,,,and a little common sense will prevail. I love this sight,,and if they ever shut one of my threads down,,I will suck it up..say SORRY 'Bout that!!! And go on. There is tooo much usefull info on here to worry about petty stuff!
Thanks Jason and all the moderators that put in time and effort for our benifit!
